Ready, Set, Spike!

West Lafayette High School is full of Red Devil Pride, especially for the girls’ volleyball team. This year, the girls’ season has been full of success. Other teams might say they’re as good as they can be, but they just don’t understand what goes into making a winning team like the West Lafayette Red Devils. Maddie Wojtalewicz exclaimed that, “Last year was a great year of hard work, and this year is even better. This year, we are 21-9.”

Red Devil volleyball players all work together, but Becca Mimms commented that, “The leading players would be Tasha Baker, Sara Collicott, myself, and Katy Brose. (Inside name: The Fantastic Four). Our setter, freshman Devin Hainje, has really improved as well and made it possible for us to be a very powerful team in the front row.”

The team’s favorite win of the year so far was when they burned the Frankfurt Hot Dogs to a crisp. “We have been longtime rivals, and have not won against them in six years,” Maddie commented. This year, however, the girls had the pleasure of seeing the scoreboard go in their favor. Maddie explained that their favorite part of playing games is that the competition is good for them, and that the entire team now has a very strong bond.

Volleyball is very competitive, even at the high school level, so the girls really do need to work together to be winners. When girls do work hard for a victory, it is bound to bring them closer as friends.

Becca Mimms was proud to tell The Scarlette, “We won our first round sectional game over Benton Central on Tuesday!” Coach Chad Marshall, who was ecstatic at the girls’ victory, admitted that the girls played very well and has high hopes for the near future.
