Winter Sports in a Nutshell

Many West Lafayette Fall sports teams ended their season with a favorable ending.  Girl’s soccer won their first ever class A state championship, boy’s and girl’s cross country finished ninth and fourth respectively at state, and volleyball brought home a sectional title.  As winter sports quickly approaches, the teams participating hope to continue this trend of success.                                                                                                                                                                          Wrestling: The team got second in sectionals, and lost in regionals last year, but John Duvall ’14 and Jade Doty ’14 made it out to individual semi-state last year. As the team only lost one senior, Jason VanMeter ’14 said, “We have the potential to go far this year.”

Key Returners: Jade Doty ’14, John Duvall ’14, Jason VanMeter ’14, and Hanson Pusey ’15

Boys’ Swimming & Diving: Placing 26th in state last year, and returning a Division 1 athlete this year, the team can only go further in the state tournament. Brandon Colonis ’14 and Logan Sotelo ’14 both placed in the top 15 as well at state. “My goal for the team to win sectionals, and place tenthor better at state,” said senior, Brandon Colonis.

Boys’ Key Returners: Logan Sotelo ’14, Brandon Colonis ’14, Scott Blomberg ’14, Cooper Williams ’16

Girls Swimming & Diving: Girls finished 37th at the state meet last year, and the girls also returned a Division 1 swimmer, Rachel Ho ’14. “I am very excited for my senior season… and for our team to go undefeated this year.” said Ho.

Girls Key Returners: Lindsey Haehl ’15, Rachel Ho ’14, Chloe Davis ’14, Olivia Kirchner ’15

Boys’ Basketball: With the hard loss at regional last year still on their mind, the fresh new team, of only one returning starter, hopes to be just as successful, if not more. “We’ve been working hard, and I think that our hard work will pay off in the end, when March rolls around,” said Caleb Smith, key senior varsity player.

Key Returners: Caleb Smith ’14, William Mbongo ’14, Nai Carlisle ’16, Jared Snoble ’15

Girls’ Basketball: Losing three starting seniors, but returning 2 great players, the team is keeping their chins up. Shelby Mann ’14 was the leading scorer and held a leadership role last year and hopes for that to continue. “People might say its a rebuilding year, but were here to prove them wrong,” said junior center, Lorelei Turner.
