G.W.P.W. boosts morale

IN THE SPRING SPIRIT: Nick Birkhimer ’14 poses for Camp Out Friday. Birkhimer was selected as one of the “Best Dressed” students for that theme.
It’s not everyday that we see dozens of kids in jean-shorts, Hawaiian shirts overtaking the hallways, or kids pulling out their Boy Scout uniforms to wear to school. Good Weather Promotion Week has made all of those possible. The event, which was held the week preceding Spring Break, is a tradition that is unique to West Lafayette High School.
The idea started during the 2008-09 school year, when Darin Larimore, Kyle Turco and Agosto Corvalan hosted the first ever Good Weather Promotion Week. It has stayed a part of the West Side schedule because it allows for students to “come together over a mutual hate for the cold weather,” says Brad Krause. Krause has participated in the event every year but this was his first year organizing it.
Krause says that, “[Good Weather Promotion Week] is a source of fun and entertainment in a school that is usually very serious and focused on academics.” He says that the week has not always been directly before Spring Break, but it adds to the “pre-Spring Break hype.”
The daily themes for this year were Jort Monday, Tiki Tuesday, Woodstock Wednesday, Yacht Club Thursday, and Camp Out Friday. Those that were the “best-dressed” for the day’s theme received an award at lunch in the commons.
Sadly, Woodstock Wednesday had to be skipped due to an overnight snowstorm that cancelled school.
Good Weather Promotion Week is something that students and teachers look forward to as it leads us into Spring Break and the final quarter of the school year. “Overall, it is just a fun way to close out the 9 weeks and head into the break,” said Krause.
