NCAA tournament recap
Round of 62- The first round is generally the most exciting round of the tournament because of the common upsets and the non-stop basketball. The stories of underdog teams were flying around and Cinderella teams were born. One of the most popular teams that made it out of this round was Georgia State because their coach ruptured his Achilles during a post-game celebration and still coached throughout their run, on top of that his son, RJ Hunter, scored the game winning shot that secured the upset against Baylor.
Upsets: 14 Georgia State over 3 Baylor, 14 UAB over 3 Iowa State, 11 UCLA over 6 SMU, 11 Dayton over 6 Providence.
Round of 36- The round of 36 featured great games that went down to the wire, including the Michigan State VS Virginia and Notre Dame VS Butler. The biggest upset was NC State beating one of the top seeds in the tournament in Villanova. As the first number 1 seed to fall, Villanova were sent home with much higher aspirations.
Upsets: 8 NC State over 1 Villanova, 7 Michigan State over 2 Virginia, 7 Wichita State over 2 Kansas, 5 West Virginia over 4 Maryland, 5 Utah over 4 Georgetown.
Sweet Sixteen- As the field is narrowed to only the better teams, the games started to go mostly to the higher seeds, except for Michigan State who continued their run by beating the number 3 seed Oklahoma. The games in this round were all close, excluding the Kentucky win over West Virginia which was won by 39 points.
Upsets: 7 Michigan State over 3 Oklahoma
Elite Eight- With most of the top seeds remaining, this round was a fun one to watch. Everything went as planned except for Michigan State over Louisville, which at this point didn’t seem like a big upset. The four teams advancing to the final four are Kentucky, the favorite to win it all and go undefeated for the tournament, Wisconsin, powered by their 7″ big man Frank Kaminsky and Guard Sam Dekker, Michigan State, the underdog as the only non number 1 seed to make it to the final four, and Duke, the sharpshooters from North Carolina.
Upsets: 7 Michigan State over 4 Louisville
Final Four- The Duke vs Michigan State game went by quickly as the Blue Devils crushed the Spartans. Then the Wisconsin vs Kentucky game started. Kentucky hadn’t lost a game all year and they didn’t plan to, until the Wisconsin started. The Badgers came out and played as well against Kentucky as anyone had previously all year long. The game was tied at half and continued to be close until the final whistle. After the game, it was easy to tell what the fans thought would happen at the start of the game
Upsets: 1 Wisconsin over 1 Kentucky
