New computer science teacher : The Scarlette: Student Newspaper of West Lafayette High School

New computer science teacher

At West Side High School in the 2021-2022 year, we got several new teachers. They all taught various subjects; Math, English, PE, Computer Science. At the school, computer science is taught by Mr. Woodard. It is his first year here, and there have definitely been changes. “I would say West Side is larger because before I was here, I taught at a school named Loogootee High school down in southern Indiana, about four hours south. Their graduating classes were half the size,” Woodard said. Computer science is a very unique and fun class that involves a lot of thought and hard work. It is a high school class that most students love doing. “Computer Science is where you will learn about how computers do what they do and how to make them do what you want them to do,” Woodard said. Not only do students love this subject, but he does too. He is really passionate about this topic and he has loved everything about it ever since he was in middle school. “In 7th grade, I remember our school got three Apple 2E computers, so this is one of the original computers that Apple products made, and then they asked different students if they would like to be involved in that. So, a few of us raised our hands and then we went into a small room, around eight and a half by ten. There were three computers and there were five or six of us running around learning how to use them,” Woodard said. Computer science is more than just learning about computers; it is the steps you took to learn them and how you approached it. “The thing I like most about teaching computer science is how creative it is. Most people don’t realize how creative it is, but it is one of those things where you can walk in and after a year, you’re able to make stuff that you’ve seen people using,” Woodard said. For the 40 days that Mr. Woodard has been teaching at WL, he would say all good things. “It has been great! The students and other faculty have all been wonderful to work with,” Woodard said.
