teachers offer finals tips : The Scarlette: Student Newspaper of West Lafayette High School

teachers offer finals tips

Ryan Kim ’15, Constantine Tsoukalas ’15, and Nikolas Gamarra ’15 study for exams in the media center. The media center will be open for quiet study sessions during finals, with two students per table.

Mr. Aufderheide

Tips on studying for math finals: “Review your old test and quizzes, find a study buddy, and ask questions if you’re going to use your teacher as a resource.”

On procrastination: “Get over it. Set a schedule. Make yourself do it. Procrastination is one of those things that is going to bug you the rest of your life. Get over it and deal with it right now.”

Mrs. Helton

Tips on studying for English finals: “Use any study guides the teacher has given you to predict essay questions. Think about what some of the big concepts have been and think how those could be worded as essay questions and actually practice preparing your answer. Think of specific answers and details. Study vocabulary, terminology or facts and study with a friend and quiz each other. For memorizing information, the best way to do that is to review it over and over again.”

On her hardest final: “My AP English final is the hardest. It requires strong analysis and synthesis skills to both be able to see how ideas relate to each other and to be able to express those relationships clearly and coherently.”

On procrastination: “It’s never too late to start studying, although a good final exam does  measure a student’s accomplishments over the course of the semester.”

Herr Studt

Tips on studying for German finals:

“I hit the same curricular points each year so that I don’t have to totally come up with a new exam.”

“I allow them to have a card they can use. Of course, that’s also a false sense of security if you’ve got the card but you have no idea how to use it. But generally what happens is that in creating the card they are oftentimes studying.”

On procrastination: “I understand the concept that you have x amount of time and you wait until the last minute. Some people actually function better that way. But if you’re a procrastinator and it doesn’t work out, don’t complain.”

Senora Espinoza

Tips on studying for Spanish finals: “Hopefully they’ve been paying attention all semester. Nothing is new information and they can just brush up on all the details. There are no surprises. It’s all information that they’ve seen before.”

On procrastination: “If you’re behind, you’d better be studying hard from the beginning of the book. Procrastinators better hope that they have photographic memory.”

Monsieur Ohlhaut

Tips on studying for foreign language finals in general: “It’s less about discrete grammar and vocabulary points. It’s being able to take a text or an excerpt from spoken dialogue and understand it and then interpret it.”

Tips on studying for French finals: “It isn’t that useful for students to sit down and study. The main goal is to have prepared well the whole semester and improve your skills overall in the language. [For lower level language classes,] the corpus of information that’s being tested isn’t all encompassing, so you could actually benefit from sitting down and reviewing the discrete concepts.”

Mr. Mullis

On studying for social studies finals: “Review what you missed on quizzes and tests during the semester. Why study something you already know? Study smarter. Discuss concepts with classmates.”

On his US History final: “The US history essay is different for all teachers. The focus of the essays will be based on the class. The concepts we are likely to be focusing on will be written on the board.”

Mr. Watson

Tips on studying for physics finals: “If you’ve done well on the test, look at that. You don’t have time to reread the entire book. ”

Tips on studying for science finals: “Math and science classes build on other things. It’s going to be too late to learn everything; it’s better in small doses over time.”

On the exams: “[The two-hour exam] simulates what students will see in college. The work carries over to college.”
