Top 5 movies to see this year

STONE COLD: “Frozen” is the first full length Disney film to be directed by a women. Jennifer Lee also became the first woman to solely write an entire screenplay for a Disney animated film since Linda Woolverton for Beauty and the Beast.
5. Disney makes a refreshing change to its usual animated movies in “Frozen.” It is a story of a queen pushed out of her kingdom by people who fear her power over ice and snow, but after she leaves, her kingdom is thrust into eternal winter. The queen’s younger sister must travel up a mountain to try and stop the snow. The animation, voice acting and story are on point for the whole movie, and the soundtrack was also one of the best Disney has released in a long time.

GIANT MONSTERS:”Kaiju” is a Japanese word that literally translates to “strange beast.” It is usually used to refer to giant monsters from Japanese science fiction films, such as Godzilla.
4. “Pacific Rim” by acclaimed sci-fi director Guillermo del Toro is a throw back to the time of giant monsters attacking cites, only this time we fight back in robot suits the size of skyscrapers. The CGI work is what makes this film the wonder that it is. The monsters and robots look so real you will be sucked into the world of Kaijus and Jaegers.
3. J.J. Abrams gets his second shot at the “Star Trek” franchise with “Star Trek Into Darkness,” a film that surpasses its predecessor in both style and in emotional strength. “Star Trek Into Darkness” loosely parallels the 1982 movie “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” with cult British actor Benedict Cumberbatch taking on the dynamic roll of Khan. Abrams brings together a strong cast and amazing action sequences to create a movie that is great from start to finish.
2. “Gravity” broke many records this year. The movie took many risks such as having George Clooney and Sandra Bullock be the only actors appearing on screen. “Gravity” centers around two astronauts who are lost in space and must make their way to the ISS for help. Gravity is second only to “Avatar” in showing the beauty and scope of what can be done with computer graphics. With great performers and a exceptional technical crew this movie is one of the best this year.
For the best movie of the year, check out the December 16 issue of The Scarlette!
